In spite of the improvements in comfort levels available for dental treatments, some individuals still experience anxiety related to a visit to a dental office. At South Blvd Dentistry, we are sensitive to these issues and do our best to alleviate any apprehension or unease in our patients. For those needing additional assistance in relieving anxiety, we offer several forms of sedation dentistry to add to their comfort.
Oral Conscious Sedation
One of the newer and more popular options in sedation dentistry is referred to as oral conscious sedation. This option is a sedating medication that is taken orally (by mouth) and which leaves the patient in a very relaxed, but conscious state. This sedation option is administered just prior to the treatment. Some patients may choose this option for procedures that take a longer amount of time. Other patients with more severe anxiety levels may request oral conscious sedation for standard dental treatments.
For decades, “laughing gas,” or nitrous oxide, has been used in dental offices to provide a very mild sedation effect for patients to help them relax during their dental treatments. Nitrous oxide is still available and used today for several reasons. One of the reasons is safety. Another is how quickly patients recover from its effects. A few breaths of oxygen and the sedating effects of the gas quickly dissipate, leaving the patient fully recovered and clear minded. Like oral conscious sedation, the patient who chooses nitrous oxide sedation remains conscious during their treatment, just in a more relaxed state.
